Gabelli School Faculty Members Bring Real-World Experience to the Classroom
Hundreds of students from Fordham University and other colleges and universities around the world study at Fordham London each year, and the Gabelli School of Business is leading the way in delivering course content to fulfill their core and major requirements. The School employs numerous instructors who deliver innovative academic content that ranges across the spectrum—from the Business of Fashion to Global Sustainability to International Political Economy.
“Our instructors offer students a ‘real-world’ approach to learning that is grounded in the experiential and goes way beyond the walls of the classroom,” said Lerzan Aksoy, Ph.D., dean of the Gabelli School of Business. “In addition to their studies at Fordham’s London Campus, those enrolled in business-related courses are able to expand their education through interactions with senior-level business executives, as well as site visits to the headquarters of top companies and organizations, including Jaguar and Barclays.”
Two faculty members who are revered for their expertise in the areas of ethics and law, as well as their ability to translate complex concepts into meaningful lessons, are featured below.
Denis Carey, P.G.Dip. in Law, LL.M., a faculty member at Fordham London, teaches the Legal Framework of Business course, which covers the law applicable to the legal problems that arise during the day-to-day operation of a business in the U.S., and which also focuses on any relevant international aspects. He is a dual-qualified U.S.-U.K. lawyer (NY and CA Bars, Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales) with over 30 years of experience lecturing at universities at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and also has practiced law in London for decades. “I enjoy teaching English law subjects to U.S. students, and teaching U.S. law subjects to U.K. and U.S. law students and lawyers, and the Legal Framework of Business course is an example of this,” he explained. The course covers a wide variety of topics, spanning across legal ethics, government regulation, torts, the creation and discharge of contractual rights and liabilities, agency, and business associations. Students walk away with a deep understanding of how business law operates in practice and are better able to comprehend any professional legal advice they may have to deal with in their future careers.
Jacqueline Jung, J.D., teaches the Ethics in Business course, which focuses on helping students to recognize the moral dimension of business decision-making and provides them with tools to navigate the potential ethical issues they are likely to face in the business world. Professor Jung is an international lawyer who worked for Ashoka and the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., and who has travelled widely as a legislative expert for the United Nations and other agencies, among them the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and World Animal Health Organization (OIE). She is an American and EU citizen, has lived in seven countries, and visited over 50, and has participated in U.N. missions across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. She moved to London in 2012 from Rome, where she taught at Loyola University and worked for a large law firm and the FAO. Her experiences provide a unique lens for teaching a subject that can be applied across numerous industries, including those focused on critical causes. “I try to give students examples of ethical issues through case studies involving real companies and organizations—those to which they can truly relate. It is immensely satisfying to see how committed to business ethics these students are and how seriously they take corporate responsibility as part of today’s business culture.”
